Higher Education Overview
Turkey's higher education system is regulated by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), ensuring consistent quality standards across all institutions. The country has over 200 universities, including both state universities and foundation (private) universities, offering education in various fields from engineering and medicine to arts and humanities.
Turkish universities have made significant strides in recent years, with several institutions now ranking among the top universities globally. The system emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical application, with modern facilities, research centers, and partnerships with industry leaders.

Bologna Process & ECTS
Turkey has been an active participant in the Bologna Process since 2001, which harmonizes higher education systems across Europe. This participation ensures that Turkish degrees are structured similarly to those in other European countries, making them easily understood and recognized internationally.
The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) is used throughout Turkish higher education, allowing students to transfer credits between institutions and countries seamlessly. This system also facilitates participation in exchange programs like Erasmus+.

Diploma Recognition
Degrees from Turkish universities are recognized in most countries around the world. As a Bologna Process member, Turkish degrees are automatically recognized across the European Higher Education Area. Many Turkish universities also hold additional international accreditations from bodies like ABET, AACSB, and EQUIS.
Graduates may need to complete a diploma equivalence (denklik) process in their home country, which is typically straightforward given Turkey's adherence to international standards. Liva Education can provide guidance on this process.
Recognition by Region
- European Union - Automatic recognition through Bologna Process
- Middle East - Widely recognized, some equivalence procedures
- Central Asia - Strong recognition, historical educational ties
